WASHINGTON, DC. - Armenian President’s press office released new details regarding the meeting of Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan with the U.S. Senators.  

According to Serzh Sargsyan, thanks to the active efforts on behalf of the Senators Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid, Armenian-American relations are currently on the highest level. Serzh Sargsyan expressed gratitude to the senators for the special treatment and thoughtfulness manifested in questions of vital importance to Armenia and its people in the course of many years.   

The participants of the meeting agreed that since the recognition of Armenia’s independence, Armenian-American relations have included wide scope of cooperation. Armenia and the United States have strong partnership relations both on bilateral and multilateral platforms.

President Sargsyan highly appreciated the continuous US support to Armenia’s economic development, reforms in different areas, democracy and civil society building, all this being aimed at the strengthening of Armenian statehood. 

The President also praised the role of the US in the maintenance of regional security and stability, including its active involvement as an OSCE Minsk Group Co-chair state in the peaceful settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.  

At the meeting participants also referred to 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, as well as the commemoration and canonization events held in different countries in that context, including the interreligious prayer dedicated to the Armenian Genocide to be held in the Washington National Cathedral in the framework of Sargsyan’s working visit.  

President of Armenia and the U.S. senators exchanged ideas on the problems and challenges of the South Caucasus region and the negotiation process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement. In their speeches all the present senators attached importance to the Armenian Genocide acknowledgement and condemnation.

The speakers also discussed questions on the creation of transportation and alternative energy possibilities necessary for Armenia in the conditions of the country’s blockade. 

As reported earlier, in Washington President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan had a meeting with Senators John McCain, Jack Reed, and Robert Menendez as well as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Subsequently, President Sargsyan met with the OSCE Minsk Group US Co-Chair, Ambassador James Warlick.
