Ambassador Traian Hristea, Head of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Armenia, believes that the Riga Summit Declaration is a new phase for bilateral relations. Hristea stated about the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The EU official said the declaration, which was adopted four days ago, first needs to be used as a new legal instrument for negotiations, and this document’s points on underscoring regional security need to be brought to fruition.

He noted that the document has created additional opportunities for the declaration that was signed in the Lithuanian capital city of Vilnius.

The fourth EU Eastern Partnership Summit was held on May 21 and 22 in the Latvian capital city of Riga. As a result, a joint declaration was adopted, albeit splits had initially emerged between the participants, and with respect to the Crimea, issue.

In particular, Armenia and Belarus had refused to sign up to any summit statement that called Russia’s annexation of Crimea illegal. Azerbaijan on the other hand, delayed the signing of this declaration, and according to diplomatic sources, due to this document’s “insufficient attention” on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
