An Armenian National Assembly delegation, led by NA President Galust Sahakyan on Monday met, at the Parliament of Canada, with Speaker Andrew Scheer of the Canadian House of Commons.

Sahakyan expressed confidence that the Armenian NA delegation’s visit to Canada will contribute to the development of interparliamentary relations, and give a new impetus to the deepening of state relations between the two countries.

The leader of the Armenian parliament expressed his gratitude to Canada for consistently assisting in raising Armenia’s status in the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

Sahakyan, speaking on the Armenian Genocide Centennial commemorations and Canada’s participation in these events, noted that this is important not solely in terms of voicing the historical facts once again, but to say “never again” to such crimes. Galust Sahakyan also thanked the head of the Canadian House of Commons for passing a resolution that declares April 24 Armenian Genocide remembrance day in Canada. He added that the Armenian NA has launched an initiative to set up an interparliamentary platform for international cooperation, and entitled “Parliaments against Genocide.”

The Armenian parliament speaker also reflected on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and he reaffirmed Armenia’s position of resolving this conflict through peace and negotiations.

Scheer, for his part, noted that he underscores such meetings with Armenian officials, and stated that cooperation will enhance by way of such talks and discourse.

The leader of the Canadian House of Commons also highlighted collaboration with Armenia, and added that they will spare no effort for establishing a lasting peace in Karabakh.

At the end of the talk, the president of the Armenian NA invited his Canadian colleague to Armenia.

Along the lines of the NA delegation’s official visit to Canada, the delegation also met with members of the Canadian Executive Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie. They spoke about Armenia’s full membership in this parliamentary assembly, which was recently achieved also with assistance from Canada.

In addition, the interlocutors spoke about the Canadian Armenian community, which, according to the Canadian side, is an exemplary community.
