YEREVAN. – The railway between Iran and Armenia will turn Armenia into a key transit country, expert in Iranian studies Vardan Voskanyan said.

If an agreement is reached during the talks between Iran and the six world powers, the situation will change dramatically. From his viewpoint the statement by Russian Railways CEO Vladimir Yakunin about the construction of Armenia-Iran railway was strange.

“I am among those who believe that the construction of the railway is important from different viewpoints. Event if it is not economically beneficial, it has a tremendous meaning from a military viewpoint. We will be free of Azerbaijani-Turkish blockade,” he told reporters on Monday.

In addition, the construction of the railway is beneficial also fro China. The expert does not think there are any obstacles to the construction.

“Given the changes of Russian side's response, the latter is not opposing the idea. We do not have to link our own projects with the third forces,” he added.
