YEREVAN. – Armenia-Iran railway is first of all necessary for Armenia as air and water, and more from a political point of view, expert in Iranian studies Gohar Iskandaryan said.

“It will save us, it will give us a new breath. But from an economic point of view, railway, at least in the next few years, will not justify itself,” she said.

However, from a political point of view, she continued, the railway is needed for Armenia to finally come out of the deadlock and end its great dependence on Georgia.

“Iran is also sending the messages that the railway is necessary. Iran will build only 80 km of the railway, while Armenia - 400 km, but we will join trans-Iranian railway, thus the northern part will connect with Iran's south by one line. Because of this, we will not only go out into the Persian Gulf, but also establish contact with the neighbors of Iran,” the expert added.

The expert said she believes Armenia's leadership has political will for implementation of this project.
