YEREVAN. – Deputy Chief of Yerevan Police Valery Osipyan once again urged protester to leave Baghramyan Avenue.

“How many days are you going to stand here? Five, ten days or may be a year? What will change?” Osipyan wonders.

In response to protesters' remark that the commission may decide to increase electricity price in 3-6 months, Osipyan said “Baghramyan Avenue would not disappear” and they can come back.

“Police can resume public order in five minutes, but we do not want to use force. I ask you to leave peacefully or to move to Liberty Square,” he said.

The police official thanked protesters for their actions, adding that this action was staged for him and his family, too.

“Thanks to you, my family will not have to pay more for electricity in the near future,” he emphasized.

The protest actions against increase in electricity prices have been held since June 22. On June 23 police dispersed protesters and detained 237 people, but the action continued in the evening. Following the statement by President Serzh Sargsyan, the initiative group divided into two groups. The first one left for Liberty Square while another part remained on Baghramyan Avenue where a protest action continues.

Despite numerous protests, the Public Services Regulatory Commission recently increased the price of electricity in Armenia by 6.93 drams—instead of 17 drams, proposed by the Electric Networks of Armenia—, per cubic meter, and this decision will take effect on August 1.
