Paris city councilors voted on Tuesday in favor of hotly-contested plans for a giant triangular tower that would be the French capital city’s first modern skyscraper in more than 40 years, reported Reuters news agency.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo diluted opposition to the new “Tour Triangle” last November after some of its planned office space was sacrificed for childcare and cultural centers.

The building, 180 meters (600 feet) high and vying on the skyline with the Eiffel Tower, will house a 120-room 4 star hotel and 70,000 square meters of office space.

The opponents to this project, however, state that it is not environment-friendly and it is too costly, reported Lenta.

The “Tour Triangle” will be on Paris’ Porte de Versailles neighborhood, reported Le Parisien daily.
