YEREVAN. – Prime Minister of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan, who is on a working visit to France, on Friday met with President Claude Bartolone of the French National Assembly (NA).

Abrahamyan stressed that France has a special place on the foreign policy agenda of Armenia. He noted, with satisfaction, the close interparliamentary cooperation between the two countries. He also underscored the fact that the visits by French parliamentary delegations to Armenia are often accompanied by trips to the Nagorno-Karabakh, too.

“France is the first country in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide by law,” the Armenian PM added. He also expressed the hope that the French parliament will be steadfast in passing a new bill that criminalizes the denial of genocide.

Bartolone, for his part, said it is a great honor to receive Armenia’s PM in this symbolic year, when the Armenian Genocide Centennial is marked. He also highly praised the Armenian-French state relations, and highlighted the need for closer interparliamentary ties and deeper collaboration. The French NA speaker also noted, with delight, the productive cooperation within the framework of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.

“Armenia is a friend of France,” stated Bartolone. “We are ready to deepen our friendship and expand cooperation.”

Subsequently, the interlocutors reflected on Armenia-European Union (EU) cooperation. In this context, the Armenian premier appreciated the assistance by France in the development of this collaboration. In his words, Armenia’s participation at presidential level in the recent EU Eastern Partnership Summit has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to deepen cooperation with EU.

The parties also underscored the close cooperation and mutual assistance within international organizations.

In addition, Hovik Abrahamyan and Claude Bartolone reflected on regional matters, and they stressed the importance of achieving a pacific settlement to the Karabakh conflict.
