YEREVAN. – According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) official data, the world food prices have fallen by 20.7 percent in May, as compared to the same period last year, reported Haykakan Zhamanak daily.

“But according to the data released by the RA [i.e. the Republic of Armenia] National Statistical Service, [the prices of] food products in Armenia rose by 4.7 percent in the same month, as compared to May last year.

“Food [prices] in the RA relatively rose by more than 10 percent in one year.

“The main reason for such a situation is that the import sector of basic consumer goods—including food—is highly monopolized in Armenia, and therefore the market logic does not work [in the country].

“Note that most of the food used in Armenia is imported, or produced from imported raw materials,” wrote Haykakan Zhamanak.
