Belgian Chamber of Deputies started debates on a motion for resolution on the Armenian Genocide, the European Armenian Federation for Justice & Democracy reported.

Speaking during the hearings, MP Denis Ducarme said the Belgian Prime Minister had declared that his government recognises the Armenian Genocide.

“They were annihilated only because they were Armenians,” he added.

Deputy Stephane Crusniere, for his part, said the Socialist Party had always recognized the Armenian Genocide, but insisted reconciliation is needed as well.

Meanwhile, Deputy Peter De Roover approached the podium wearing the 'forget me not' pin, a symbol of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide.

Commission for foreign relations of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies adopted resolution on the Armenian Genocide last month.
