YEREVAN. - The threat of electricity price hike [in Armenia] should be eliminated by August 1 by raising a new wave of protest, members of “Rise up, Armenia” civil initiative told Armenian News – NEWS.am in Yerevan’s Liberty Square today. According to them, there’s delusion in the society that the problem of the tariff has been solved after President Sargsyan’s announcement.

“Many people today think that if the government stops subsidizing electricity price hike, it will again be possible to restrain tariff rise by protests. But we must be able to raise a new wave of protests by August 1 and achieve abrogation [of the decision],” civil initiative council member Davit Sanasaryan said.

“Rise up, Armenia” movement members also held discussions with some political forces on raising new protest wave to find out who will back them then. The names of fractions will be presented later.

The initiative members also said that the struggle against the draft constitutional reforms is also on their agenda. According to Andrias Ghukasyan, member of the initiative council and former presidential candidate, the draft constitutional reforms will later deprive the civil society of the possibility to influence political decisions through protests.

The activists announced that they invite the policemen for discussions on holding free and peaceful rallies. “If the police don’t agree, we will consider that we have warned them, and will continue our protests,” they said.
