President of the National Assembly of Armenia, Galust Sahakyan, extended a message of thanks to President of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium, Siegfried Bracke.

“Allow me to express my deepest thanks to you, for the Belgian Chamber of Representatives’ adoption of a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide that occurred in 1915 in the Ottoman Empire.

“I am confident that this step by the Chamber of Representatives will contribute to the prevention of such crimes against humanity in the future.

“The Parliament of Belgium yet again confirmed its commitment to the high values which the entire people of Belgium avow,” Sahakyan’s message specifically reads.

As reported earlier, an Armenian Genocide resolution was adopted Thursday at the plenary session of the Chamber of Representatives of Belgium.

The motion passed by a vote of 124 for, none against, and 8 abstentions.

The Chamber of Representatives, which is the “lower house” of the Federal Parliament of Belgium, had held heated discussions in the last few days regarding this resolution, and the MPs had pointed to the need to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

The Senate, which is the “upper house” of the country’s parliament, already had recognized the Armenian Genocide by passing a respective resolution in 1998.
