YEREVAN. – With the constitutional reform bill, an attempt is made to give more powers to the Prime Minister.

Chairman of the opposition Democratic Party of Armenia (DPA), Aram Sargsyan, noted the aforementioned at a press conference on Tuesday.

Sargsyan reflected on whether the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) aspires to reproduce its power, and noted that if all the reforms remain on paper, there is a possibility of infringements in any system of governance.

“Of course, the RPA wants to reproduce [its power],” said the DPA leader. “If the Constitution remains on paper, there will be all possibilities to infringe it.

“Why was the current Constitution bad?”

And when asked why, in this case, the Armenian authorities are embarking upon a constitutional reform, Aram Sargsyan responded that the situation has somewhat changed, since the President can not be reelected for a third term.

Chapters 1 through 7 of the new draft Constitution of Armenia were made public on July 15. Accordingly, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
