YEREVAN. – Turkey, by striking at the Islamic State (ISIS) positions in Syria and opening military bases for the coalition air forces, creates an illusion that it is determined in the fight against ISIS, and stands with the international coalition.

Arab Studies specialist Sargis Grigoryan stated the above-said at a press conference on Wednesday.

“It is clear that the Turks will not tolerate a dangerous organization such as the Islamic State in the proximity to their country,” added Grigoryan. “At the same time, it is clear that the Turkish authorities will not tolerate also the existence of a Kurdish state in the Syrian territories bordering Turkey.”

As per the expert, what currently takes place in the Middle East is aimed at the fulfillment of the objectives of and statements by the Turkish authorities.

“Turkey, by putting pressure on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party [i.e. the PKK], solves the following problems,” stressed Sargis Grigoryan. “First of all, by weakening the PKK positions, it weakens the Syrian Kurds.

“Second, it attempts to drive a wedge among the Kurdish forces in the Middle East.

“Third, the Turks try to prove—through air strikes—that they can carry out military operations—with methods convenient to them—to achieve their goals, and attempt to raise their standing in the region and beyond its borders.”
