YEREVAN. - Criminal cases have been initiated on maternal mortality registered in Armenia over the last year, but in only one case has a charge been brought against a doctor.

Although the relatives of the dead women in labor and pregnant women accuse the doctors of the tragedy, no single doctor was charged over the last year. According to the information provided by Armenia’s Healthcare Ministry, 4 cases of maternal mortality were registered during the first seven months of 2015. The last case occurred on July 29: Mary Margaryan, 26, who had a Caesarean section, was moved from Yerevan’s “Shengavit” medical centre to Erebouni hospital, where she died after two days.

The newborn baby also died the next day. Case files are being prepared with regard to the event; expert examination is commissioned.

The policy adopted by law enforcement authorities in case of maternal mortality is the following: they open a criminal case, commission different expert examinations, whose conclusions are presented only in several months. During that period, the relatives of the dead continue to raise the issue, while the doctors in charge keep on working in the same medical centers.
