YEREVAN. – In connection with the article on banana prices, which was published in Haykakan Zhamanak daily, the Armenian State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (ASCPEC), is engaged in collecting certain information to find out a possible infringement of the competition law, reported the daily.

“Gayane Sahakyan, Press Secretary of the Chairman of the RA [i.e. the Republic of Armenia] State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition, responded in this way yesterday [i.e. Friday] to our query on whether the ASCPEC is examining the banana market.

“Several days ago, we had published photos from the Moscow and Yerevan supermarkets, from which it was becoming clear that bananas are more than twice cheaper in Russia than in Armenia.

“There is no doubt that this is a consequence of the monopoly that has been established in this market [in Armenia] for years.

“The ‘Catherine [Group’] Company, which is linked to head of the CESJO service [i.e. the Armenian Justice Ministry’s Compulsory Enforcement Service of Judicial Orders], Mihran Poghosyan, carries out the banana imports to Armenia,” wrote Haykakan Zhamanak.
