On August 19, at the invitation of RA President Serzh Sargsyan, RF President Dmitry Medvedev is arriving for a state visit to Armenia. His wife Svetlana Medvedeva will accompany him during the visit.

The Russian delegation includes politicians, regional governors and big businessmen.

A protocol on the prolongation of deployment of Russian military base #102 in Armenia is to be signed. Under the protocol, the military base will remain in Armenia for the next 49 years.

The Russian President is to visit the Memorial to Armenian Genocide victims and lay flowers. President Medvedev will participate in the opening ceremony of the military cemetery Hill of Honor in Gyumri, the burial place of Russian officers killed in the Russian-Turkish wars in the 19th century.

Unprecedented security measures are being taken in Yerevan on this occasion.

An informal summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is to be held in Armenia on August 20-22. CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha arrived in Armenia on August 18.

In an interview with Public TV of Armenia he stated that, honoring their commitments, the CSTO member-states will always defend the partner-states’ interests. Armenia will not be alone in defending its national interests at international institutions. “In case a political attack against Armenia or Russia is launched, all the others come to help and state their disagreement with certain assessments,” Bordyuzha said.

According to the information on the CSTO official website, the situation in Kyrgyzstan will be high on the agenda of the Yerevan Summit. The Armenian, Russian, Belarussian, Kyrgyz, Kazakh, Tajik and Uzbek Presidents will discuss the situation in the country and collective measures to stabilize it. The summit will also discuss proposals to improve the crisis response system with the OSCE, as well as topical issues of cooperation in resolving regional security problems.

President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov will not participate in the summit.

On August 18, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko arrived for a private visit to Yerevan on August 18. No information on his meetings in Armenia is available.

Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon is to arrive in Yerevan from Sochi, where he held a meeting with his Russian, Afghan and Pakistani counterparts.
