Animal rights activists in Spain are against the “duck chase,” which a festival that is held every year in the seaside city of Roses.  

According to tradition, the festival participants throw live ducks into the Mediterranean Sea, and then people have to catch and bring them back to shore.

Sometimes, however, these ducks also play the “role” of a self-defense tool, Veti.ru reported citing the Metro newspaper.

Animal Rescue Espana has criticized the event and has launched an online  petition calling for the end of this celebration.

An animal activist went to Roses to video this “barbaric celebration.” The event participants, however, did not like being filmed. And one woman even held a duck by the legs and hit the animal rights activist several times.

But the town mayor, seeing this video, is now thinking about putting an end to the century-long tradition.
