YEREVAN. – The percentage of children who do not attend schools has grown in Armenia.

Head of the Social and Nature Protection Statistics Division at the National Statistical Service, Nelli Baghdasaryan, said the aforementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

Accordingly, in the case when solely one percent of children between the ages of six and nine were not attending schools in the country in 2009, this percentage has now risen to 7 percent.

Baghdasaryan explained, however, that the increase in this relative indicator may be due to the results of the latest census. According to official data, Armenia’s population has dropped from 3․2 million to 3 million.

In addition, as per the expert, there is a considerable number of schoolchildren that are registered in Armenia, but live abroad with their parents.

“We can compile statistics with solely official data, and not the population that is de facto in the republic,” concluded Nelli Baghdasaryan.
