YEREVAN. - The inaugural session of the Commission on admission of Diaspora Armenian and foreign students to educational institutions took part in Armenia’s Ministry of Education today.

Armenia’s Education Minister Armen Ashotyan, who chaired the session, said the government provides 70 scholarships every year for Diaspora Armenian applicants who express a wish to pursue education related to Armenian studies.

According to the Minister, this project aims to not only give free education to young people, but, more importantly, also solve the issue of preserving the Armeian identity. Thus, according to him, priority should be given to the applicants of the communities, which face the grave issue of preserving the Armenian identity.

Ashotyan also said that the social policy for the Syrian Armenian students remains the same as that during the last year.

“This year too the tuition fees for Syrian Armenian applicants will be the same as for local student. Our Syrian Armenian fellow countrymen continue to remain in the same grave situation and the state has to help them,” the Minister said.
