45,000 people took part in the Spanish festival of Tomatina, which was held on Wednesday in the Spanish town of Buñol, Valencia.

This year Tomatina marks its 70th anniversary. Overall 125 tones of tomatoes were prepared for the holiday. Seven lorries were required for their delivery, the festival organizers said, tomatina.es reports.

The “tomato fight” was attended by the representatives of 96 countries: Spanish (18%), British (14%), Indians (10%), Japanese (8%), U.S. citizens (7%) and Australians (6%).

As a result of the “fight,” 22 participants sought medical assistance.

This year the organizers decided to introduce several technological innovations: special mobile applications, specifically the game Tomatina Defense, were developed. Today’s doodle is also dedicated to Tomatina.

Tomatina’s history dates from 1945, when the fight between two young men ended with the improvisation of a tomato fight by a large number of people, who had gathered at the central square of the city.
