YEREVAN. – The suspicions, according to which the constitutional reform in Armenia is aimed at the “reproduction” of power, are substantiated.

The first Human Rights Defender of the country, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” NGO Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Thursday.

In her words, even though this trend had always existed, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) was gradually getting fewer votes.

“[But] here a question rises for me,” stressed Alaverdyan. “Is it [President and RPA Chairman] Serzh Sargsyan that compels to reproduce power? Or [is it] the oligarchic system standing with him?”

In this context, Alaverdyan also reflected on the recent incidents involving the Provincial Governor of Syunik, Suren Khachatryan, and President of the Football Federation of Armenia, Ruben Hayrapetyan.

“Whether they are guilty or not, they should resign in case of such huge suspicions,” stated the first Ombudsman of Armenia. “This is the last chance for them to preserve honor.”

Larisa Alaverdyan added that the RPA members are confident that “there is no one better than them.”
