YEREVAN. – By the end of 21st century Armenia's population may drop to 1.8 million, says the United Nations World Population Prospects revised report for 2015.

According to the official data, Armenia's population is estimated at 3 million 18 thousand, but by 2030 this figure will fall to 2 million and 993 thousand, while by 2100 – to one million and 793 thousand.

Demographer Ruben Yeganyan said estimations are based on the current emigration rate.

“Of course, it is difficult to forecast what will happen in the future. For example, in the 70s we made a forecast, according to which Armenia's population had to reach 4.2 million in 2000. You better know what has happened. Thus, forecast is not prediction, but assumption. And in our case it is a warning of what can happen if things will continue as they are, and if 30-35 thousand people continue leaving Armenia each year,” he said.
