Armenian Rachel Melikian has spent nearly a week on the Pacific Ocean island of Guam to experience and learn about its local culture.

There she met with village mayors and dignitaries and proposed an idea to organize a trip of Guam representative and a group of local children to Armenia so that they teach the Armenian children the culture of Guam, Pacific News Center writes.

Specifically, Melikian is proposing for the children of Guam to participate in the Armenian holiday Paregentan (Cheese Fare Week), which takes place the last Sunday before Lent.

Much like in the Chamorro culture, Armenians hold celebrations with food, dances and cultural activities.

According to Melikian, she is holding discussions with the Armenian consulate and hopes to create a strong tie, especially given Guam’s tourism ties with Russia, where many Armenians reside.

She said that both Guam and Armenia have persevered through hardship during their entire history but have both preserved their culture.

“If the proposal follows through, this will be the first time Guam participates in an Armenian festival,” the newspaper writes.
