YEREVAN. – The constitutional reform is indispensable for the vitality of Armenia’s politics.

President of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, Galust Sahakyan, stated the aforesaid at Friday’s special parliamentary session, and devoted to the ongoing debates on the new draft Constitution.

“Wrong are those who, giving in to populism, think that the Constitution is being changed for one person [i.e. President Serzh Sargsyan]; let no one confuse the Constitution with one’s own unwritten laws,” noted Sahakyan. “The [Armenian] state is us all (…); the Constitution is for everyone, and it aims to help create the best conditions for everybody.”

In his words, neither the current Constitution nor the constitutional reform is for or against someone, and it is crucial for socioeconomic and social development.

“And the [NA] discussions are in progress for this very reason,” added the Armenian parliament speaker. “And the [respective] proposals are considered regardless of [political] party affiliation.”

The new draft Constitution of Armenia is debated in the NA. Pursuant to this draft, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
