YEREVAN. – There are real resources for electricity tariff reduction in Armenia.

“Alternative” Research Center Director, economist Tatul Manaseryan, noted the above-said at a press conference on Wednesday.

The economist recalled that the first step has already been taken regarding the audit that was to be conducted at the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) CJSC.

“My guess is that the current owner of the company has itself launched the sale [of the ENA] to avoid problems,” noted Manaseryan.

In his words, an audit was to be conducted in the company, and it would have revealed the loss that was caused not solely to energy, but the economy of Armenia.

“It’s unacceptable that the [Armenian] government agreed to compensate the losses of the [private] company,” added the economist. “It turns out that the [electricity] tariff increased by two times [in the country] because of these losses.”

In his conviction, the solution for Armenia’s strategic facilities—such as the ENA—could be nationalization, whereupon the country would announce a tender and sell these facilities.

“The establishment of an equity company is the best option,” concluded Tatul Manaseryan. “The shares would be sold to the public, and we, as consumers, would oversee all processes.”
