YEREVAN. - 237 foreign citizens have applied to the State Migration Service of Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations in the period from January-September 2015, Petros Aghababyan, head of the Asylum Issues Division at the State Migration Service told Armenian News – NEWS.am.

According to him, the applications on granting asylum were submitted by 78 citizens of Ukraine, 68 citizens of Syria, 47 citizens of Iran and 44 citizens of Iraq. Refugee status was least of all granted to Iran citizens – the application of only 2 out of 47 applicants were satisfied.

Overall, 112 out of 237 applicants to Armenia’s State Migration Service, who were mainly citizens of Ukraine, Iraq and Syria, were granted the status of refugees.  

Petros Aghababyan also said that the number of applicants to the State Migration Service of Armenia has increased in 2015 as compared to 2014 thanks to the influx of refugees from Ukraine, whose major part has already been granted that status.
