YEREVAN. – The authorities did everything to hamper Monday’s protest action of the “No” front against the constitutional amendments, and outside the National Assembly (NA), since they knew that members of the “You will not Pass” initiative—which launched this protest—plan to make public, on the same day, the future courses of action of the struggle by the “No” front.

Head of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) NA Faction, Levon Zurabyan, told the abovementioned to the demonstrators who have assembled outside the parliament building, and after the NA’s passing of the draft decision On Putting Constitutional Reforms to Referendum.

The ANC MP added, however, that even though the NA has passed the aforesaid decision, Serzh Sargsyan, as President of Armenia, can still stop this process.

Zurabyan, on behalf of his party, urged the President to stop the referendum process which, in his view, will cause a rift between the people in the country.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance. The opponents of these proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be the authorities’ attempt to prolong their power.
