YEREVAN. – In case of adopting the draft constitutional reform, Armenia will become a prime ministerial country, and not a parliamentary one.

Member of the opposition Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party National Assembly (RLP NA) Faction, Hovhannes Margaryan, stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Wednesday.

In the MP’s words, the RLP’s recommendation, and regarding the need to strengthen the balance between the three branches of power in Armenia, was not accepted.

“There is no such system in the current draft of the constitutional reforms,” noted Margaryan. “No matter how beautiful a car may be, it will break down very quickly if its wheels are not balanced.”

The opposition deputy added that the provision, thanks to which the current political monopoly in Armenia would be possible to eliminate, is not included in this draft constitutional reform.

The NA on Monday voted on and passed by a vast majority the decision on agreeing to hold a referendum on the draft amendments to the Constitution.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, Armenia will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
