We are not electing authorities, or fighting against the authorities on December 6; this is a referendum on constitutional amendments.

Artur Yeghiazaryan, a representative of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) Dashnaktsutyun Party, which favors these amendments, said the abovementioned at Saturday’s talk in Spitak town, and within the framework of the ongoing TV program devoted to the proposed constitutional amendments.

As per Yeghiazaryan, numerous opposition forces support these amendments.

“This is not a cosmetic change, but rather a radical change [in the system of governance in Armenia],” he added.

Armen Mkrtchyan, a member of the Hayazn Party, which opposes the proposed constitutional amendments, for his part, stated that there is apathy in Armenia regarding these amendments.

“Now, we need [to make] one choice. Are we to express satisfaction with the authorities? Or not?” he said, in particular.

And as per MP Samvel Farmanyan of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, which supports the constitutional amendments, the political parties with a distinct leader are primarily against these amendments.

The referendum on Armenia’s draft constitutional amendments is slated for December 6.

Pursuant to the new draft Constitution, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.

The opponents of the proposed constitutional amendments, however, consider them to be primarily the authorities’ attempt to hang on to power.
