YEREVAN. - The Armenian Parliament adopted the draft amendments to the Law on Administrative-Territorial Division of Armenia during the second and final reading today.

68 MPs voted “in favor,” while 16 of them voted “against” and 15 abstained, Armenian News – NEWS.am correspondent reports.

The draft amendments to the Law on Administrative-Territorial Division of Armenia, drawn out on the basis of the results of local referendums on enlargement of communities, introduces the concept of constituent communities (consisting of several populated areas) and approves the first of them, namely Tumanyan and Dilijan  in the north and Tatev in the south. Each new community will include 8-10 villages, in the first two cases together with the city round which they are located.

To put it otherwise, the new units become something average between the former municipalities and Soviet regions. The aim is to reduce the expenses on the local self-government and create opportunities for the implementation of joint programs between the neighboring villages.
