Azerbaijan has decided to make another attempt to involve the U.N. in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. This time Baku has used the ex-president of one of the Baltic states as an instrument.

The U.N. is to appoint its special representative for Nagorno-Karabakh, Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Special Envoy of the U.S. Secretary General and Vice-Chairperson of the expert group for long-term development of the European Union (EU), stated in Baku. She believes appointing a special representative will not facilitate the settlement of the conflict.

Azerbaijan is for a peaceful settlement of the conflict, and Armenia too should remain committed to the way of settling the conflict by means of negotiations.

Interestingly, Azeri mass media widely advertised Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga’s statements as an argument in Azerbaijan’s favor – bringing the negotiation process out of the OSCE Minsk Group. But just a few days ago official Baku, under unprecedented international pressure, had to withdraw its resolution from the agenda of the U.N. General Assembly’s 64th session.
