YEREVAN. – The Armenian authorities’ promises, according to which the positions of the opposition will be strengthened after the constitutional amendments, are a bluff.
Head of the opposition Armenian National Congress National Assembly (ANC NA) Faction, Levon Zurabyan, stated the above-said at Friday’s NA briefings.
In his words, announcements were being made that the Constitution was being amended so that the opposition would take part in the decision-making process, together with the authorities.
“[But] just like before, [President and ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Chairman] Serzh Sargsyan resolves all matters, with his RPA,” Zurabyan added.
A referendum on constitutional amendments was conducted in Armenia on December 6 of the year past. As a result, a total of 63.37 percent of the voters said “yes” to these amendments, whereas 32.36 percent voted “no” in this plebiscite.
Pursuant to the new amendments, the country will make a transition from a semi-presidential to a parliamentary system of governance, and conduct completely proportional parliamentary elections.
