YEREVAN. – According to official data, the monthly inflation rate in Armenia made up 2.2 percent in January of the current year.

The shoppers’ demand had considerably reduced during the first month of the year, and therefore the January retail trade is the lowest in the calendar year.

In this case, why is it that the prices are rising, whereas the shoppers’ demand is increasing in the country in January.

The monitoring of prices in Armenia is conducted on the 1st, 10th and 20th of each month; that is, the highest indicators of the pre-New Year days are not reflected in the December figures. But as a result of the aforesaid drop in shoppers’ demand, the partly reduced prices are transferred to January.

In a yearly view, however, the January “picture” in the country is quite the opposite, as a 0.4 percent deflation is recorded in the country.

Extremely low inflation, especially deflation, could have negative consequences for Armenia’s economy.
