YEREVAN. – The Republic of Armenia Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RA MFA) has confirmed the information that, according to preliminary data, there are RA citizens among those detained on suspicion of complicity in the assault on an Armenian couple in Istanbul, Turkey.

“[But] due to the absence of diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey, the opportunities for rendering consular assistance are limited,” the respective MFA statement also reads. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs follows the developments. Additional information will be given, if needed.”

As reported earlier, On February 6, unidentified persons broke into the house of an elderly Armenian couple in Istanbul, and stole expensive jewelry and large amount of money.

Also, they tied up the couple and fled.

Before the law enforcement authorities’ arrival at the scene, however, the 85-year-old husband died of suffocation, whereas his wife survived.

Eight persons suspected of breaking into the couple’s house were detained in Turkey’s Trabzon city, and while trying to leave the country, the Governor of Istanbul Province, Vasip Şahin, said.

He noted that the objective of the attack was robbery, according to Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency.

“Seven of the eight detainees are Armenian citizens, one being a Turkish citizen of Armenian descent,” the governor added.

Milliyet daily newspaper of Turkey publicized the names of these suspects: Artur A., Aram E., Serj B., Marianna E., Lida B., Nargiz B., Armine M., and Cristina M.

One of the suspects worked at the jewelry store owned by the elderly couple.
