YEREVAN. – Under the name of proportional election system, we actually will deal with another version of the majoritarian election system in the draft Electoral Code of Armenia.

Founder and Director of the Armenian Institute of International and Security Affairs, political analyst Styopa Safaryan, stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Monday.

Reflecting on the political opposition’s demands on applying electoral ink to the fingers of the voters during elections in the country, Safaryan noted: “Perhaps this is not a good decision, but the inking of the fingers has proved its ability to reduce [election] fraud.”

As per the analyst, a sociopolitical consolidation is taking place in Armenia, in terms of developing a single position regarding this draft election law.

“The proposed draft to the Electoral Code is one step back, as compared to the previous Electoral Code of Armenia,” Styopa Safaryan added.

The draft Electoral Code of the country has been sent to the European Commission for Democracy through Law (Venice Commission) of the Council of Europe, for expert opinion.

The Armenian National Assembly on Tuesday will resume deliberations on this draft election law.

The new Electoral Code of Armenia shall be adopted by June 1.
