The death toll after a series of earthquakes has reached 34, and about 100,000 people have been evacuated in Japan's Kumamoto prefecture on Kyushu Island.

About 2,000 people were taken to the hospitals of neighboring Kumamoto and Oita Prefectures, where an earthquake occurred in the morning on April 16.

The first major earthquake with a magnitude 6.5 occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture on the west coast of the southwestern Japanese island of Kyushu on April 14. Another earthquake with a magnitude of  7.3 occurred at the same place. In neighboring Oita Prefecture also occurred an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3.

In total, including aftershock tremors in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures, there were more than 290 earthquakes. About 160,000 families were left without electricity, RIA Novosti reported.
