The cooperation between Iran and Turkey is an important step towards Islamic unity, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said at a joint press-conference with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara.

“Our cooperation is very important for Islamic unity. Turkey will chair the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for two years, and we will be able to properly cooperate first of all with regard to the Palestinian conflict. It’s not essential for us whether we are sunni or shia: the most important thing is to be Muslims. Love and brotherhood – this is the genuine Islam, which we should show to the world,” Rouhani said.

He added that despite the controversies between Turkey and Iran, both countries are ready to work together in different directions.

For his part, Erdoğan stated that Anakara and Tehran have agreed to return to good-neighborly relations and raise the level of political dialogue between the two countries.

“Our commodity turnover with Iran constituted $22 bln USD. After imposing sanctions on Iran, it decreased to 10 mln. With the removal of sanctions, we want to take this indicator up to 30 bln,” the Turkish president said.

“The most important thing for us is to stop the bloodshed in Syria and Iraq. We have agreed on this despite certain controversies between Turkey and Iran,” he concluded, RIA Novosti reports.
