Over 400 workers of Turkish opposition media outlets – Zaman newspaper and Cihan news agency – have lost their jobs.

“Overall 400 people from Zaman and Cihan have been sacked, including the foreign staff reporters,” the newspaper’s former correspondent told RIA Novosti.

Cihan employee confirmed that the majority of journalists at the agency’s capital bureau were also sacked Friday. “17 out of 25 journalists have been fired at the agency’s office in Ankara today. If the agency isn’t closed at all, it will at least be staffed with journalists from pro-governmental media outlets,” he said.

In the beginning of March, the Istanbul court appointed trustees for the management of Cihan. Similarly, the largest Turkish newspaper Zaman was placed under state control, following which its critical approach to the government changed by 180 degrees.
