The heavy rain and hailstorm caused considerable damage to several villages in Samtskhe-Javakheti Province of Georgia, regional governor Akakia Michutadze told Rustavi 2 TV of the country.

In Michutadze’s words, as a result of the heavy rainfall, Otskhi River burst its banks and inundated Varkhani and Untsa villages while the hailstorm destroyed the rest of the crop.

“The water took the animals and birds, flooded homes,” he said, reported Georgia Online news agency. “The rescuers are trying to get the water out of the homes, but it’s still raining.”

Javakhk—Georgian name: Javakheti—is a predominantly-Armenian-populated part of Georgia’s southeastern Samtskhe-Javakheti Province.
