The Armenian railway concession to Russia doesn’t anyhow threaten the country’s security, Armenian Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication, Artur Arakelyan, said in the parliament Monday, responding to MP Khachatur Kokobeltan during the session on state budget performance report for 2015.

In his speech, Kokobelyan expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that almost all the infrastructures of Armenia are under the control of Russian companies. “A mistake was made back then. Such strategic objects shouldn’t be transferred to another country: This is a security matter. Communication to Russians, railway to Russians…,” Kokobelyan said.

For his part, Arakelyan explained that the relevant Armenian institutions have certain plans and are carrying out necessary tests on the railway.  Based on those tests, it can be said that there is nothing to worry about. “If need rises to operate in the regime of high-level security, regardless of concession, the management shall be transferred exclusively to Armenia. Such a provision is provided by the concession agreement,” the Deputy Minister said.
