YEREVAN. – Armenia suffers a lot from the image of an economy with mini monopolies.

Ambassador Piotr Świtalski, Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation to Armenia, stated the abovementioned at Tuesday’s roundtable discussion on economic competition, and presentation of the results of a respective research.

In the ambassador’s words, Armenia needs decisive actions to free itself from this image.

Świtalski said the Armenian authorities have stressed their interest in continuing economic reforms in the country, and added that the EU representatives wish to contribute.

He noted that the EU approach is that the agencies dealing with economic competition need to be strong, independent, and free in their actions, in any country.

As per the EU ambassador, the next challenge is the laws, and Armenia suffers a lot from the image of an economy with mini monopolies. He noted, however, that the country recently has made progress in improving the climate of free competition.

He expressed confidence that the Armenian government will be able to not only create a competitive climate for Armenian businesses, but bring in foreign investments.

Piotr Świtalski added that they encourage the Armenian government and the minister of economy to have more intensive dialogue with the business society, and that the EU stands ready to provide any assistance to accelerate this process.
