Leakages of lists with data of about 100 thousand people occurred in 36 of the 47 Japanese prefectures, Kiodo agency reported quoting the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan.

The majority of the data is outdated, but more than 18 thousand files are used now. The insurance policy in Japan is one of the important documents, along with a driver's license and passport, used to identify personality. There is a risk of using the data for fraud and extortion.

The Ministry of Health considers that most likely leakage of data took place from hospitals and pharmacies where drugs are bought on prescription at a discount on the insurance policy.  However, despite the investigation, officials did not manage to give the exact answer to a question where the leak came from, RIA Novosti reported.
