On June 1, 20 years after construction works there will be functioning the second road tunnel of Saint - Gotard in Switzerland, reports The Wall Street Journal. It will be the world's longest tunnel, about 56.3 kilometers long, and will connect German and Italian speaking regions, reports RNS.

The tunnel will reduce the travel time from Zurich to Milan and the Alps and  will increase the number of passengers traveling from the northern part to the southern part of Europe.

Credit Suisse Group estimated the cost of the project at 12.2 billion francs ,or $ 12.3 billion. The Swiss president Johannes Schneider Amman, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the French President Francois Hollande, and the Italian Prime Minister Matteo RENZ will attend the opening ceremony of the Tunnel.
