The unity of Europe, even if it might only be an appearance, as well as the unwillingness to yield to the  Russian President Vladimir Putin are two reasons , which explain the possible outcome of the extension of the anti-Russian sanctions by the end of June , reported Le Monde.

According to the newspaper , Hungary , Greece, and Italy have recently criticized the sanctions to still be preserved in the same form, whereas the Eastern European countries require to follow the tough political line against Moscow.

According to an expert , the EU will have to make minor modifications not to tense the internal disagreements and escalate already tense relations with Russia today. Unlike previous cases, when sanctions were adopted at the level of ambassadors and were of technical nature , it will be the leaders of the European countries who will discuss the issue  in June.

The newspaper writes that it is not the only concession to the countries who are in favor of sanctions’ removing . Thus,  the option of extending the sanctions for three months, rather than for six months, is being discussed today. Another possible scenario is that the sanctions will still be extended for six months , but they will be gradually removed.
