British Prime Minister David Cameron, opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn as well as First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon voted in the Thursday referendum for Britain’s staying in the EU.

The campaign before the referendum marked by the fact that both -  the head of the ruling party Cameron and the leader of opposition Corbin — joined forces, urging Britons to vote "for" staying in the EU.

Cameron and his wife Samantha voted at their polling station close to the government residence in Downing Street. The head of Scotland Sturgeon also gave his vote in the dividing referendum, RIA Novosti reported.

Britons faced the task to determine the direction of development of the country for decades ahead, answering a question: "Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union or leave the European Union?"

In the course of the campaign public opinion polls showed that supporters and opponents of membership are divided almost evenly.
