People in Armenia respect Pope Francis very much because he went “upstream” and recognized Armenian Genocide.

Italian journalist Simone Zoppellaro stated the aforesaid on the air of Rai, Italy’s national public broadcasting company, commenting on the Pontiff’s visit to Armenia, from Friday to Sunday.

As per the journalist, this recognition had a great impact, which is equivalent to the German Bundestag’s recent recognition of Armenian Genocide.

According to him, while in capital city Yerevan, the head of the Catholic Church will also visit the Armenian Genocide Memorial, honor the memory of Genocide victims, and meet with the progenies of Genocide survivors.

In Zoppellaro’s words, Pope Francis’ visit to Armenia will be important also in terms of seeking avenues for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
