Pope Francis denounced what he called the ideologically twisted and planned "genocide" of Armenians by Ottoman-era Turks, Associated Press reports.

According to the article, during his speech, the Pope uttered the word at the last minute, adding it to the prepared text. On the first day of his visit to Armenia, Pope Francis immediately called the events of the last century a genocide, the agency reports.

“But Francis, never one to shy from speaking his mind, added the word at the last minute in a speech at the presidential palace to President Serzh Sargsyan, Armenian political and religious leaders and the diplomatic corps.They gave him a standing ovation,” the article reads.
