YEREVAN. – The Police of Armenia on Saturday issued a statement with respect to detaining young activist Shahen Harutyunyan, in Gyumri.

“The police noticed Shahen Harutyunyan hiding an object inside his shirt, today at Vardanants Square in Gyumri town, before the offering of the Holy Mass by the Pope of Rome.

“Considering the latter’s [i.e. Harutyunyan’s] previously displayed hooligan behavior and numerous cases of disobedience against police officers, the police required from him to be within a reasonable distance [away] from the site of the mass. 

“[But] Harutyunyan refused to comply with the lawful requirement by police officers.

“[As a result,] the latter [i.e. Harutyunyan] was subjected to administrative proceedings.

“Shahen Harutyunyan, as a juvenile with a suspended sentence, is under the supervision of the division of sentence execution,” the statement specifically reads.
