YEREVAN. - NATO has no plans to attack or violate the airspace of Armenia; thus the joint air defense mechanism of Armenia and Russia shouldn’t be considered as a measure against NATO unless the sides themselves state about it.

Batu Kutelia, Deputy Chairman of the Atlantic Council of Georgia, said the aforementioned Monday, during the Internet press-conference, organized by Region research center for the Armenian media.

Touching on the issue as to whether the ratification of the agreement on establishing joint air defense system between Armenia and Russia can impact the interrelations between Armenia and NATO, Kutelia stressed that Armenia, as any independent sovereign state, is free to choose its allies, framework and level of cooperation with them, as well as the methods of ensuring the defense capacity and security.

“The strategic decisions like the “joint air defense system”, have short- and long-term consequences and require thorough consideration”, the Georgian politician said.

The agreement on creating a common air defense system between Armenia and Russia in the framework of the common security system in the Caucasian region received the positive conclusion of the profile committee of the Armenian National Assembly (NA) on June 3.

The agreement was signed on December 23, 2015 by the Armenian and Russian Defense Ministers Seyran Ohanyan and Sergey Shoygu in Moscow. The Armenian NA will consider its ratification this week. The agreement has been signed for 5 years, with the possibility of prolonging it every 5 years.
